Repolano Hot Springs – A Lesser Known Luxury Retreat in Tuscany

The Terme di Rapolano are located about thirty kilometers from the beautiful Siena, in two spas one kilometer from the center of the small village of Rapolano, in the heart of the Crete Senesi: the Antica Querciolaia and San Giovanni.

Obviously the Terme di Rapolano were already known and used by the Romans, who in the matter of spas were rather experienced and passionate, it then became a well-known place for skin diseases during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Rapolano thermal waters gush out from the subsoil at a temperature of 39 40 ° and are rich in sulfur, calcium, sodium, magnesium and bicarbonate, particularly suitable for the therapeutic treatments of respiratory, cardiovascular and skin diseases, as well as naturally for the induced muscle relaxation from the intense heat.

The Terme di Rapolano are not very famous and especially attract people from the surroundings, if you go in the less crowded periods, away from the weekends and the summer, you will have the spa all for you.

How to get to the Terme di Rapolano:

By car, leave from Siena to get to Rapolano in half an hour along the Siena-Bettolle motorway junction and then exit at the appropriate junction.

The same link leads to Rapolano from Perugia, after a journey of 1 / 1.30 h. The motorway junction allows you to shorten your journey times a lot, unless you run into times of particular traffic.

What to see in the surroundings of Rapolano Terme

it is an attraction in itself: just wandering the car through the narrow streets between hills and gentle slopes to find postcard views and panoramas, with the terrain that, in all shades of gray and ocher, acts as a frame for filarini of cypresses and rustic farmhouses.

When and if you decide that you have had enough to photograph beautiful landscapes, you can go without hesitation to Siena, a city of art, history, and culture that satisfies the most demanding tourist.

Rapolano itself, however, deserves an in-depth visit: in fact there is a vast Etruscan archaeological area, with an imposing thermal complex and necropolis.

The inhabited center with a medieval layout makes a fine display of the Castle and the Palazzo del Podestà, while in the immediate surroundings there are small and delightful villages, although unknown to most, such as Armaiolo, Poggio Santa Cecilia and San Gimignanello.

Particularly characteristic of the area are the handicrafts, which are worth taking home on your return: in Rapolano the traditional travertine working activity to manufacture knick-knacks, amphorae and small sculptures is famous, while in San Giovanni d’Asso, in a few kilometers away, one of the finest white truffles in Italy is gathered.

An unmissable event in the area is the Crete Senesi White Truffle Market Exhibition held every year on the second and third weekend of November at the castle of San Giovanni d’Asso.
